Why Can I Not Apply In Person?

I’ve been on the job hunt for awhile now and some situations are just astounding. Most jobs come along easily for me, but the past few months things have changed. I’ve really had to step up my game to compete with designers that hold many years under their belts. This is not really a problem because I like a challenge and I am pushing my skills further. The problem, I believe, stems from the amount of applicants and companies unable to meet each one. The standards have changed from apply in person, to pray the internet gods will land you at the top of the inbox. I’ve only recently found this out, which is a rude awakening. It always made sense to me to walk-in somewhere, talk to who hires or the boss, and get to know them in person. How can they truly judge my character from an email? How could I see if this job is the one? Besides hoping the email makes it, it can take days to get a response. What if they need some other reference or attachment? More time. I can talk about and show my work, along with getting a feel for the company atmosphere, in 15 minutes max. I even ask or answer questions that could be three emails away. I’ve researched various blogs and applicant hunting companies and have been told not to come in person. Some don’t even want you to call them, just plain old email. I believe these are the main reasons  some companies cannot find good employees, and it is more difficult for me personally to find a job. I thought companies were built from people not emails. I am very interested in feedback, employers and applicants alike. Do you think it not right to show up at a place to ask for work? I do mean within reason, employers are people too, they get busy and have lives outside of work.  Comment here or send me a tweet with your thoughts.

Spice Things Up With An Accent Mural

I got the chance recently to create some very fun artwork for a friend’s office. It has been awhile since I’ve brought out my paintbrushes and this was a great project to play with. Almost a year ago I moved to Arizona from Kansas and I did not come with very much. All of my previous mural work is in Kansas, on hard copy photographs, awaiting to be brought to digital. One of my memorable projects was created for my highschool, a mural on the community swimming pool bottom, depicting two huge panthers.  Below are photos of my friend’s office with the mural on the closet doors. The paint used is the same as the room’s accent color, and the shape design mirrors an etching from a bookcase in the corner. Most murals can easily be applied to any surface bringing style to a room, adding depth, and looking fantastic. Who wouldn’t want their favorite sports logo, cartoon, or land/cityscape covering the wall? I’ve always thought Ninja Turtles vs. Transformers would be great on a child’s wall. Disney is great, but Ninja Turtles vs. Transformers… Epic. More creative work like this will be coming soon, so stay tuned. If you have ideas, or would like one, contact me. You know you want one. :)

Welcome to the World of M

Hello everyone and welcome to my brand new portfolio blog. I’m very excited to have this site up and would like to give a big thanks to April Holle.  She helped a tremendous amount with helping me get my web bearings. My background is in print design and the web is an adventure I’ve been wanting to explore for some time. This site will facilitate having an online portfolio easily attainable to anyone, let me share design resources, and give everyone a little insight into how my mind works.

Design fascinates me for multiple reasons, but I’ve always been amazed by the power of it. A design can sway emotions and thoughts causing a person to love or hate an item, place, or thing. Companies rise and fall by the power of a design. People are brought to places and think certain thoughts all because of a simple font or color. It is truly astounding. My love of art and design took me to school for graphic design and pushed me to make it a career choice. I cannot truly call something a job if I love to do it. The design world grows and changes constantly and I relish the chance to try new things and push my boundaries further. Currently I’m looking for full time work, but freelance jobs are always welcome. If you have anything that needs done, like painted cartoon characters on your children’s wall, design and layout of magazines, new brand identities, or anything you can think of, get in touch with me.

Thanks everyone for stopping by the World of M and come back soon, more aha moments are on the way.
